Even though, our department primarily focuses on Anatolia, it also pays considerable attention to Central Asia, Balkans, Africa, and Middle East. The courses of the department mainly teach Turkish history, but we offer courses for European history together with courses for other areas and nations. Thus, our department aims at examining Turkish history within the scope of world history with the means of developing methodologies of discipline of history.

The undergraduate program consists eight semesters, and the courses are given in accordance with chronological order. Our department offers both must and elective courses, and after third semester, students might benefit from wide-ranging offered elective courses. These elective courses complement the must courses, and nourish the students’ knowledge about the field. Besides, students learn the research methodologies and techniques, and acquire the ability to interpret and evaluate the historical data and context through the courses such as Methodology, Seminar and Undergraduate Historical Research. In our university, the medium of instruction is Turkish, yet beginning with the third semester, students improve their foreign language skills with the help of Academic English courses, given for four semesters.

Our faculty scientifically examines the history by using historical methodologies. Also, they seek for developing new research methods, and discovering new historical data through their studies. Samsun University History Department aims to train students, having skills to be excellent historians, and eager to serve society.
